In the GMIS classroom it is important to establish rules, grace and courtesy early on. Setting the ground rules for the classroom community is such an important part of the success of a Montessori classroom. Teachers introduce the various work areas of each classroom so the children can locate their work and return it to its correct place.
Some of the typical introductory topics of study include the human body, learning about their eyes, nose, mouth and ears and creating an artistic self portrait to display in the classroom.
Teachers also introduce lessons about leaves and the environment to the children, showing the various shapes and sizes and creating science and art projects to learn from. The children then settle in and their learning is set in motion for the rest of the year.
